IFA 2003 DVD+R/+RW Video Recorder Product Launches

The Internationale Funk Austellung (IFA) in Berlin is the world's largest consumer electronics fair. Every two years, IFA will showcase many new product introductions. In 2001, IFA saw the launch of the first DVD+RW products from Philips, while only Thomson and Sony demonstrated some prototype models. Two years later, DVD+RW has become a meanstream format, with many companies actually producing and selling DVD+RW based video recorders. As we can see from the overview below, this not only includes big brand names like Philips, Sony, Thomson and Yamaha, but also a large amount of Asian companies trying to break new price points for consumer DVD recorders.

The DVD+RW Alliance was present at IFA as well with their own booth, with 8 consumer recorders on display. A quick search at the fair ground however reveiled that some 20 other companies have introduced DVD+RW recorders, or plan to do so. This is remarkable, as the products from the companies on display at the rival format's promotion booths were actually the only products for these formats to be found at IFA. This resulted in a total of 4 brands with DVD-RAM recorders, and 4 with DVD-RW recorders (one of them combining this with DVD+RW functionality).

As there is one thing that became clear from this year's IFA, it is that DVD+RW has finally managed to become the clear format of choice for most manufacturers, even the ones with no political stake in either format. For now, let's have a look at the DVD+RW recorders that I found on the fair floor. And forgive me if I missed any!

Make sure also to check out the completely updated DVD+R/+RW Video Recorders Leaflets archive, containing many new brochures.
